Lesson 5: Your Trading Cockpit (MT5 & TradingView)

Part of Module 2: Getting Started - Your Trading Setup

Introduction: Your Window to the Markets

A pilot has a cockpit with all the controls and screens needed to fly a plane. A trader has a "trading cockpit"—the software that allows you to view market data, analyze charts, and execute trades. For modern traders, this cockpit usually consists of two essential tools that work together.

Analogy: The Engine and The Navigation

Think of your trading process like driving a high-performance car.

  • MetaTrader 5 (MT5) is your Engine and Steering Wheel. It's the powerful, industry-standard platform you use to execute your trades.
  • TradingView is your GPS and Satellite Map. It's a modern, web-based platform with the world's best charts and drawing tools. It's where you plan your journey.

Our professional workflow is simple: we Analyze on TradingView and Execute on MT5.

Deep Dive: MetaTrader 5 (MT5) - The Execution Engine

MT5 is the platform your broker will provide. It's robust and fast, which is perfect for managing your account and placing trades. The interface has four key areas:

  1. Market Watch: On the left, this is your list of currency pairs with live bid/ask prices.
  2. Navigator: Below the Market Watch, this is where you can switch between accounts and access your indicators and Expert Advisors (EAs).
  3. Chart Window: The main, central area where you see the live price charts.
  4. Terminal: At the bottom, this powerful window shows your open trades ("Trade"), your account history ("History"), and important system messages ("Journal").

Deep Dive: TradingView - The Navigation System

While MT5 is great for executing, most professional traders agree that TradingView's charts are far superior for analysis. It's free to use and runs in your web browser.

  • Clean Interface: The charts are beautiful, fast, and easy to read.
  • Powerful Drawing Tools: It has an unmatched collection of tools for drawing trendlines, support/resistance zones, and advanced patterns.
  • Huge Community: You can see analysis and ideas from millions of other traders.
